Together with our colleagues across the industry, we are responsible for delivering a comprehensive training and development programme so our jockeys can be recognised for their skill, athleticism and courage and represent the best values of British horseracing.
Through a far-reaching support system provided by JETS, the PJA, BHA, BRS, NHC and employers, UK based jockeys can enjoy one of the best development programmes in the world, creating a safe and inclusive environment for athletes to flourish. The programme covers physical, practical, emotional and intellectual aspects of development.
COVID 19 UPDATE – Due to the current restrictions we’ve amended the different aspects of training and development below in order for jockeys to get the most out of the support network whilst racing is suspended.
Jockey Coaching Programme
Jockey coaches are all still available via phone and WhatsApp messaging and are good sounding boards for jockeys who are not riding. They can offer remote training sessions and can signpost you to other services that you might wish to take advantage of whilst not racing. Don’t forget you can log on to the app and:
- View your coaching sessions and any videos your coach has uploaded
- View and evaluate your Personal Development Plans, review your goals and actions
- View your skills profile
- View your Racing Excellence series race reports and Documents
- Watch Jockey Matters Videos
Strength & Conditioning
Although Injured Jockeys Fund centres, gyms and leisure centres are closed there is an awful lot of things you can do from your own home to stay active and keep yourself fit and healthy. Why not try new something new like Yoga or Pilates. The IJF have composed some dedicated ‘Performance’ videos for you to try at home. You can also get in touch with the IJF teams to get a personalised plan.

MENTAL HEALTH & WELLBEING
This is a particularly testing time for everyone and for jockeys in particular. The mental health provision for jockeys is very accessible so you don’t have to suffer in silence. Mental health support is available through the Injured jockeys Fund and the PJA.

Personal Development Plans
JETS has two Personal Development Managers who work with jockeys from the very start of their career developing a bespoke Jockey Personal Development Plan which is structured to provide support in a range of key personal and professional areas to ensure each jockey reaches their potential and is well prepared for their lives ahead.
Even though jockeys aren’t racing, there are plenty of goals that they can set themselves using the PDP postcards so please work with Phil and Lisa to set and review some goals.
The Professional Jockeys Association is the first point of call with jockeys who have any financial queries during the current lockdown. Please contact them for more information on the support packages available for jockeys.
